China passes law to make Islam more Chinese in nature, adds a touch of socialism too

China has passed a law that seeks to "Sinicise" Islam within five years and might do that with other four religions in the country, according to the state media.

Under the all-powerful Chinese President Xi Jinping, China has heavily cracked down on religion, especially Islam practised by most Uighurs in the country's Xinjiang province who Beijing suspects of having separatist and extremist tendencies.

"China passed a five-year plan to Sinicise Islam at a meeting on Saturday with representatives from China's eight Islamic associations," said a report in the Global Times.

"During the meeting, participants agreed to guide Islam to be compatible with socialism and implement measures to Sinicise the religion. This is China's important act to explore ways of governing religion in modern countries," the report said.

There are over 20 million Muslims in the country. Islam is one of the five officially recognised religions in atheist China. The other four are Taoism, Buddhism, Catholicism, and Protestantism.

The top officials in the Chinese government have often likened the religion to "mental disease" that "needs to be cured".

China has come under heavy international criticism for reportedly detaining over 1 million Muslim Uighurs in indoctrination camps in Xinjiang.

In the past, Beijing has adopted heavy-handed measures with the authorities confiscating copies of the Quran, issuing diktats to Muslims not to grow beards, and not choose names for their wards which sound "too Islamic".

Defending the "Sinicisation" of Islam move, the Global Times in an opinionated report, said: "Generally speaking, modern countries are secular and diverse in a globalized world. But the revival and spread of religion have somewhat impacted secular society. Fundamentalism has caused more religious violence and religious nationalism is threatening countries' legitimate governments and leading to social instability."

"Governing religion is a common challenge faced by all modern countries. The main purpose of China's five-year plan to sinicise Islam is to seek governance that tallies with Chinese practice, and it is not only limited to Islam."

Do you think spread of religion has impacted secular society

Trump looking forward to meet Imran Khan, improving US-Pak ties

"We want to have a great relationship with Pakistan, yet they house the enemy," says Trump.

The US wants a "great relationship" with Pakistan but cannot do so as the country "houses enemies", President Donald Trump has said in his first comments in 2019 on America's strained ties with Islamabad, months after he stopped USD 1.3 billion in military aid to its former ally.
Speaking to his Cabinet colleagues on Wednesday, President Trump, however, said a meeting with the new leadership in Pakistan under Prime Minister Imran Khan will take place "very soon".
He said his administration has initiated peace talks with the Taliban in war-torn Afghanistan.
"We want to have a great relationship with Pakistan, but they house the enemy. They take care of the enemy. We just can't do that," Trump said.

"So, I look forward to meeting with the new leadership in Pakistan. We will be doing that in the not too distant future. But I ended USD 1.3 billion that we paid. I think it was water, we were just paying to Pakistan. So, I ended that," he said.

Trump also alleged that Pakistan had not been fair to the United States.

"We give Pakistan USD 1.3 billion a year... (Laden] lived in Pakistan, we're supporting Pakistan, we're giving them USD 1.3 billion a year - which we don't give them anymore, by the way, I ended it because they don't do anything for us, they don't do a damn thing for us," he had said. "They give safe haven to the terrorists we hunt in Afghanistan, with little help. No more!" Trump added.

Earlier, South Carolina Senator Lindsay Graham, who is considered close to President Trump, told CNN in an interview that if Pakistan helped the US in bringing the Taliban to the table for negotiations, the US would focus on counterterrorism and the ISIS.

The Republican Senator needs the US to offer Pakistan a free trade agreement as a motivating force to push the Taliban to the harmony table to end the Afghan war.

Prime Minister Khan was confirmed as Pakistan's Prime Minister in August a year ago. The cricketer-turned government official said in January a year ago that gathering President Trump would be a "harsh pill" to swallow.

Just a month ago, Trump composed a letter to Khan, seeking Pakistan's help with stuttering Afghan peace talks and support in bringing the Taliban to the negotiating table to end the 17-year brutal war in the neighboring nation.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met Prime Minister Khan in Islamabad in September a year ago and squeezed him to take "sustained and decisive measures" against terrorists threatening the regional peace and stability.

The relations among Pakistan and the US crashed a year ago in January after President Trump blamed Islamabad for offering nothing to Washington except for "lies and deceit" and giving "place of refuge" to terrorists.

The US has more than once said that Pakistan was giving places of refuge to the Afghan Taliban and the Haqqani arrange aggressors to assault US soldiers in Afghanistan.
The US Congress likewise passed a bill to slice Pakistan's guard help to USD 150 million, altogether beneath the historic level of more than USD one billion every year.

The Trump administration announced early a year ago that it was suspending security help to Pakistan over contrasts on Afghanistan however shown that preparation programs for military officers will proceed.
